Sweet!

Updated my rig - I junked Windows in lieu of Ubuntu 8.04, and I'm currently in the process of re organizing all the junk data I've accumulated over the years. This includes ICQ chat logs from 1997, old emails and massive gigabytes of pictures, and other bits and pieces of nostalgia.

My 9 year-old CRT monitor also conked out and started flickering yellow intermittently. I had to smack it around to get the blue back on screen. I must say I was impressed though, given how long it was in service for. I'm now rocking out on a 21.6" TFT LCD. I would've gotten a dual 19" setup, but why get greedy?

I'm trying to simplify and streamline my work and play processes, which includes preference over open source (read: free) software. Everything is running good. Now I'll just need to clean up. Remember what they say: your inbox reflects who you are. And so does the bathroom mirror in the morning.

I beat "Through the Fire and Flames" on Guitar Hero III, on Hard. It was a weird sensation seeing the flurry of colors on the screen and the microsecond when it all came together with my fingers tapping furiously along the plastic frets. I got the goosebumps. I just see patterns of colors on the screen, lock everything out of my consciousness aside from the melody and beat, and go FTW. So awesome. I am such a loser. Suck.

Not my day today!

Wokeup pretty early by any standard, but spent the morning doing laundry and errands for the dog. Bath and blowdry, takes an average of 2 hours for a white and fluffy dog. A cotton ball!

Yesterday late afternoon, I ordered a new SATA 500gb Western Digital hard drive from NewEgg because I'm planning on transforming one of the new desktops at work into a file server running Ubuntu. Imagine my surprise when the package arrives this morning, barely even 12 hours when I ordered the thing!

So I rush to the office, but pass by a Mcdonalds to load up on their crap McChicken and even more chicken nuggets (I'm a pig like that). I'm busy contemplating the schedule for the rest of the day, as I calmly get back onto the street after the drive-through. I stop at the intersection, but for some reason, made a left... and before I know it, a cop on a motorcycle pulls me over. Apparently there was a red arrow light, which of course I didn't see. Yay. Here goes traffic school.

I get to work, and cheerily open the box while snarfing down my nuggets. Open up the computer and... tadah. I find out that the new hard drive doesn't have the normal 4-pin power cable, and I need a new set of SATA power and data cables. Ugh. I was getting excited too. The nerdery will have to wait until tomorrow I guess. Fry's, here we come. And online traffic school.

I'm posting from my old IBM Thinkpad X23, running Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). I had Kubuntu previously, but decided to uninstall and try out Ubuntu, and I'm pretty impressed! Everything seems to work right out of the box - so far. The biggest headache I previously had was getting the wireless to run, but this set up peachy keen.

I think my room has officially turned into the nerdery. In front of me I have a total of 4 computers: a PC desktop, two macs (iBook and PowerBook), and the Thinkpad. Don't ask.

and so i passed the CISA, btw. :)

finally! i upgraded the firmware of the extra WRT54GS linksys router into dd-wrt, and converted it into a repeater - effectively extending network access to the rest of the house. tomorrow i'll try enforcing WPA encryption and maybe change the SSIDs into something more interesting..
